Review: The Assault on Reason by Al GoreThis is one of the most outstanding non-fiction books I have read in many years. It is a book that should be available in school libraries and perhaps even as a required reading.
The author exhibits his knowledge of history, our government and the constitution. He delves into the corruption of power. He explains how fear, secrecy and blind faith is used to mislead the public with explicit examples of how this occurred during the Bush Administration. What can the public do to counter the wave of misinformation is of special interest? It is evident that two-way communication has been lost and must be restored. This book is not about the author, but about the republic and what can be done to preserve the institution created by our founding fathers. If you want to be informed about our government, this is a book of enlightenment.

Who would have thought Al Gore could be so eloquent, persuasive, and passionate? Well, he is. And he has no qualms with monopolizing the market of inconvenient truths. "The Assault on Reason" reveals a truth that, if we aren't already well-aware of, almost certainly intuit reason, logic, and truth are in alarming short-supply in this country and if we, as a people, don't open our eyes, turn off our televisions, and engage in the national political discourse, the sovereignty of our country may slip away. One such reason for this lack of reason, as it were, is America's obsession with television and the four hours and thirty-five minutes we spend, on average, watching it *every* day. The bumper-sticker advice, "Kill your television", is now more important and timely than ever. Nevertheless, Gore brackets his points re television with a discussion of the internet at the end of the book and how, if allowed to develop largely free of government intervention, could revive the national discourse, stave off further anti-intellectualism, and steer this country back toward a country of the people, by the people, for the people. In sum, Gore's treatise is well-written, artfully presented, and capable of inspiring rage, disgust, and...the motivation to return our government to one of laws -- not incompetent, power-obsessed, religiously crazed men.
Al Gore's latest book is urgent and important but suffers a bit from wonkiness. As an editor, I would have cut the text by a third or more. To top that off, there are at least two total non sequiturs that any reasonable editor should have repaired. It is enough of a slog that I'm afraid many readers won't make it to the final two chapters in which Gore makes his case that we might be able to salvage democracy in the United States through the use of interactive media and a resurgence of citizen participation. This is not to disparage Gore's damning case against the abuse of power by George W. Bush & Company which comprises most of the book, but only to suggest that it is overlong. I kept thinking, "You already said that." All told it is as convincing a case for impeachment as I have read (though Gore doesn't suggest that himself) and ought to form the basis for a war crimes trial of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz and their cronies. Oh, how this makes me wish, for the thousandth time, that Gore had put up more of a fight in Florida in 2000. He so clearly has the depth of knowledge, the understanding of history, the experience and the heart that are all profoundly lacking in the former Texas governor who usurped the White House by hook and by crook. As the author so gently chides at one point, "The fact that this administration can't manage its own way out of a horse show doesn't mean that all government programs should be abolished."
I think this book is good but not that good. I mean as a majored of public administration I am already familiar with many contents in this book. However, I do appreciated Al Gore’s first hand experiences that mentioned throughout the book. In additional of those many quotes of famous people do aspiring me to reread old statements. However, I am not sure if this is a good book for someone who isn’t into politics...
An insult to all who have been born more than once, who believe that government should be shrunk until it can be drowned in the bathtub, who think that "a well-regulated militia" includes the right to carry a gun in a campus bar, that atmosphere and oceans are dumping grounds of infinite capacity, that believe that Mitt Romney should pay only 13% on a $22 million income because he is a "job creator" - in China. And if you still believe that tax cuts for the top .1% will "trickle down" to those 75-year-old marchers carrying signs "Get The Government out of My Social Security!" well, then you'll find this book really offensive.
Economic interests are now the only basis for the information we are subjected to in TV, internet, & newspapers. Democracy requires facts, and active participation of clear thinking people. Gore rightly proposes that our country is so engrossed in economic success that at present It is distorting and perhaps destroying our democracy.
I had to read this book for a graduate course on applied decision theory but once I got into it I found it incredibly interesting. We all know Al Gore as the harbinger of climate change and former vice president but his treatise on the loss of reason in our country was poignant and perhaps speaks to some of how we got our current president.
