Nick and Lisa have been divorced for 8 years following the death of their infant daughter Robin. Although she died of SIDS, they both have so much anger, blame and heartache, it's best to stay far away from each other. Nick's sister Maggie is a new widow and is having a melt down at home with her family and life. She needs to get away and breaks down and asks Lisa to come and care for her children and home so she can get away. Lisa is an important member of her new fiancé's advertising company, but she can't say no to her friend, especially after ignoring her and the rest of her family for years. Nick and Lisa seeing each other could be ammo for disaster. Maggie is now on a hunt for a woman that sent an intimate letter to her late husband. The story and characters is so strong and well defined. You feel like you are right in the midst of all this emotion, drama and chaos. I really loved the book. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I felt it got too drawn out and I felt a bit bored in the middle and found myself just scanning over parts. All in all, another great book by Barbara Freethy.Tags : One True Love [Barbara Freethy] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. I admit...romance is one of my favorite genre. No matter that the plot is predictable, I still love them. They're sometimes a bit too mushy for my taste, but so long as they don't go too far beyond my limit, I still love them. They're easy to read, and best of all, they've either for the tug-of-the-heart or squirm-in-your-seat factor. I love some tugging and squirming.
This novel has actually two parallel love stories. Though it was clearly Lisa's and Nick's primarily, for me it was equally that of Maggie's and Jeremy's. They're related as the characters knew each other, but their respective stories were coursed differently.
Lots of heartwarming themes romantic love, lost love, family, friendship, children, miracles. Everything's here, nothing more that a hopeless romantic could ask for.
This book was very touching and heartwarming, especially for couples who have experienced the loss of a child and everything that comes with it. This is primarily the story of Lisa and Nick, but there is also another secondary story in the background, of Maggie, Nick's sister. Lisa is about to get married in four weeks to her much older boss when she got a call from Lisa, her ex-sister in law and best friend. Maggie needed Lisa to help her watch her kids for a weekend. Maggie needed a break, after being a widow with 3 children. Lisa hears the desperation in Maggie's voice and accepts. Lisa has not been back in San Diego in a long time, there were too many painful memories there for her, and there was Nick, her ex-husband. When Lisa arrives, she is a bit overwhelmed with everything. She has no experience taking care of children, she thought she was the worst person since her own baby Robin died under her care, but Maggie needed a break. Maggie is going through a tough time since she received a suspicious letter for her dead husband, from a woman. Maggie takes off for a much needed R&R, but her curiosity about this woman and the weird circumstances surrounding her husband's death made her try to seek her out.
Nick has become a very successful business man, he ran his own business designing and creating baby furniture. He was shocked to hear that Lisa was back. He has not seen her for many years and somehow still felt compelled to go see her and be around her. He was also concerned for his sister's children, so he decided to stay and help. Nick and Lisa's relationship has been strained, with the way their marriage ended, with the death of their baby, feelings of disappointment, etc. Being around each other forces them to face their fears and clear the air. Book is about second chances and being able to move on.
Story was emotional at times, humorous, romantic and very enjoyable. It is a great read, I would have paid for, even better when it is for free!
One True Love by Barbara Freethy has become my most favorite book of all of the author's books I have read to date.
Nick and Lisa, previously married but divorced for 8 years after the death of their child, theirs is a charmingly written story of how misunderstandings and the naivety of youth can destroy a relationship and how years of maturity and learning about themselves can teach a person to not only move on from a tragedy, but also learn to love again.
The story includes a second story of Nick's sister Maggie and her own beautifully intermixed story of dealing with the death of her spouse.
Beautifully written and completely engaging! I highly recommend this book to everyone - I couldn't put it down!
I was hesitant to get this book because of the subject matter- My husband and I lost our infant daughter almost 4 years ago and I sometime find it emotionally draining to read about similar situations and the emotions that go with it. So I didn't know if this book would portray the feelings and emotions in an accurate way. I figured if I didn't like how it was written, I had the choice to stop reading.
I really enjoyed this book. I felt like the feelings of all the characters were really on the mark. I don't know if the author has lost a child- but either she has or has been very close to someone who has. She expressed the grief and the thoughts perfectly without making it over-dramatic or like things could be "fixed" or "gotten over" with time. Because if you've lost a child, you know that you never get over it. There is no fix. *SPOILER ALERT* Even when the characters go on to have more children, the baby who died is never forgotten or replaced- and that's really an awesome thing for the author to have written because it's so true. My husband and I had another baby after our daughter died and the fear of getting pregnant again and the anxiety of it all is so scary. All of those things were represented in this book. A great romance with a really touching storyline!!
