Gonzo The Life of Hunter S Thompson Corey Seymour Jann S Wenner Johnny Depp 9780316005272 Books

Probably the best biography of the late Hunter Thompson's (1937-2004) life. Very readable, filled with funny, scary, blood curdling, and amazing accounts of possibly the most memorable and interesting author of the 20th century who also happened to be a "self-confessed drug addict and opium eater". Filled with hundreds of fascinating stories from dozens of people who knew him. A very good read - I actually wrote to the man in 1982, and received a very friendly reply. scrawled in that huge handwriting of his - along with 2 buttons, one reading "I am not like the others"...who could not love a writer like that? RIP Mr Thompson, the world is a little more dull without you in it anymore.

Gonzo The Life of Hunter S Thompson Corey Seymour Jann S Wenner Johnny Depp 9780316005272 Books Reviews

Good, through, enjoyable.
Great read
Slow dry read. Partly my own fault for not noticing it was an oral biography. In the end it does make it clear that Hunter Thompson was a low life piece of garbage
An incredible collection of countless interviews with the people who were there. Sympathetic yet honest and revealing.

I loved this book.
If you're interested in HST, you'll learn more than you might have wanted to hear. The gossipy tone give you a lot of authentic stories told by the people (famous and not) who sat with him in his kitchen, traveled with him etc. It's heavy on the gossip and I must say that as HUGE fan of his writing, i was sad to find out some of the stuff of his personal life that makes me recoil. Clearly the people who contributed to this love him and were a bit frightened by him and many of them enabled him into becoming the icon that he became.
Next time I will want to read something that focuses more on his writing and less on his 'colorful' personality. (I know a bit more about it now, thanks to this book, than I might have wanted to know.
Most fans of the good Dr. Thompson know him from his words (or more unfortunately, from Johnny Depp's caricature in the Vegas film). Gonzo is a unique book that shows HST's prowess behind the camera lens, documenting his own life, work and experience. The book is organized in a loose chronology of his life, with related excerpts from his writing. From his service days on Eglin AFB in Florida to his time with Sandy at Big Sur and in the Caribbean to the Vegas era and on the '72 campaign trail, Thompson beautifully captured the large and small elements of the world around him. The most fascinating images are not of Thompson's public persona, but the private photos from his time in Puerto Rico, Woody Creek and Key West. HST used the camera to augment his memory; images of a hotel table filled with his odds and ends are as memorable as the more famous photos! The only glaring omissions are photos from the last two decades of his life; the book would be a more complete document if it included images of his entire life.

The 'literary edition' now available is in a smaller format than the original release, but retains the high-quality uncoated paper of the original run. The graphic design of the book is excellent, with vibrating color schemes as surreal as HST's world! I can't recommend it enough to fans of Dr. Thompson.
It may not be filled with every single detail of his life -wouldn't suggest it as a bio; rather a visual journey throughout his younger years. Personally I love it as one of my coffee table books. I want to share him with others. The bright colors pop out and draw you towards wanting to open it. You are invited into his world, his work and travels. This book is filled with many interesting and rare photos of Hunter. For example as you scroll through you find some pages set up with many small photos on 1 page, then a large quote on the other page with the date and piece it was written from. It is set up so coupled with the variety of photos- some big & some small, followed by an excerpt about what you're viewing really puts you into the mind of HST. In a way it feels like his personalized, all over the board scrapbook. The pages are different vibrant colors against the many black and white photos, makes this beautiful art work in my personal opinion-as he documents his experiences and wild personal life through a photographic journey. What's not to like about it? The many photos alone are worth purchasing Gonzo.
