Spend every waking minute staring at a computer screen. Throw in some self destructive habits. Stir. Repeat. This weekly routine nearly killed him. In a moment of insanity (clarity?), Dave Conroy quit his computer job, sold his belongings and, buying a bicycle, set forth around the world. He hadn't been on a bike in nearly 20 years but you never forget, right?
This is the story of someone who, finding himself caught up in the daily struggle for happiness, took the bold move to step outside his comfort zone. Leaving behind family and friends, he took the first step to reprogram the mind and find inner peace.
For anyone interested in taking that step away from the daily grind, the hustle and bustle of structure, burned out from Information Technology, wanting to embark on a long term journey by bicycle this should appeal to you.

Tired of IT! How I learned to stop worrying and love the bicycle eBook Dave Conroy Reviews
In short, this is a book less about the specifics related to biking (although there is a fair amount of that) and more about finding the inspiration and courage to simplify and live a fantastic life, following one's ambition. There are a number of anecdotes which allow the reader to put oneself on the road along with the author, experiencing the isolation, and comradery which the author encounters. If you are an adventurer at heart, and could use a bit of motivation, I recommend the read.
A remarkable memoir of a very interesting life. I have been following Dave's travels on Twitter and his webpage ([...]) for several years and have been fascinated. His book is not a summary or rehash of his web page, its the back story of what brought him to his life on the road. Dave writes about his philosophy, the characters he meets and some good tales. He tells us about the world in between the major cities and tourist attractions of North America. The world we mostly pass by but is rich in uniqueness and character. I want to get on my bike and experience some of this.
In tired of I.T! Dave has managed to come up with a book that is like no other about travelling by bicycle that I have ever read. Instead of the standard formulaic introduction with a little background and then a collection of his favourite stories from the road, Dave has come up with something very different. While the book starts out slowly, you should persevere with it as his backstory develops in an intriguing and very open way as he goes through his life before the bike looking at problems; many of them while being extreme are possible to relate to.
His 7 mantras are good and if we all followed them we could definitely see improvements. In the final chapter, Dave finally tells us the details of some events he alludes to earlier as we learn about his time in the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. Reading them, I couldn't help but wish there were more stories in the book, but that's why he has a well-made blog full of stories from his time on the road.
I have been riding a bike for many years, learning about and acquiring snippets of wisdom along the way. Dave, like surprisingly many modern day long distance cyclists came to cycling late, and as such has been on a much steeper learning curve, which makes for a riveting read. I thought I knew a lot of the tips and tricks, such as knowing that cemetery's are a reliable source of fresh water, but Dave puts these patches of common land to an even more resourceful use, whilst always respecting his hosts. The attention to detail in this book is extraordinary, and after reading it you will know the calorific difference between the peanut and macadamia nut. His story is also a reminder that the most dangerous person you are likely to meet is yourself.
This is really two books in one, as the first few chapters go into the back story of how Dave arrived at the start of his cycling journey, which is an astonishing tale in itself, hinted at in the book's title.
An enjoyable and informative book - it even convinced me to sell my car.
I like epic journeys under human power and have read hundreds of accounts of such journeys by bike, oar, foot, ski, and paddle. I started reading Tired of I.T. from that frame of mind and was not interested in the back story (that is front loaded in the book). The lack of professional editing showed, yet I have been following Dave's Twitter feed for a month or so, so felt invested to keep reading.
At some point I changed my perspective on the story and started reading it as a memoir, a window into a life that is so very different from mine, not in the bike travel, but the compulsiveness, the substance abuse, the personal internal journey that Dave is taking. The unedited writing, the reflections, the lists and the details shared start to make sense and expand my awareness of and compassion for other human beings. And, as other reviewers have mentioned, Dave has embedded some valuable cycle touring information within his memoir.
I look forward to reading his progress in life and by bike through Africa and beyond.
Travel adventures in this book are mixed with practical recommendations on bike issues. The descriptions are detailed and summarised. The structure of a book is original and not boring at all. I drew a lot of useful and practical information from the book. Dave has definitely skills in writing, and his blog is also proving this. Separately, I would admit author's contemplations on life issues and the reasons which led him to his current lifestyle. I wish him good luck in his adventures on the road and expecting prolongation of Dave's stories.
I loved reading this book! I was sad to reach the end. The only bad part was that the book should have had more editing. There are many places where it seems like the author re-worded a sentence, but didn't quite get it right. An editor or proof reader should have caught these. But other than that, I loved the book. You can figure out what he is trying to say, despite the writing issues. I almost want to send him some cash so that he can keep riding longer. If you write another book, you might consider including English units as well. For example 30 degrees (86-F) 120 km (75 miles).
